This is from an unfortunately unattributed clipping (from a paper that had a refreshingly undogmatic attitude towards splitting infinitives, I note). Fortran had just been invented that very year, by the way.

Les recoins de l’internet (ou plutôt du web) : Un musée des mots allemand (ou allemands) étrangement dépouillé, sans étymologie ou notes d’usage. Un mot par semaine dans l’exposition et donc une collection de seulement 26. Seraient-ils ceux que les auteurs du site veulent consigner dans les archives de la langue, ou bien ceux qui mériteraient être mieux connus et plus souvent employés ? Mystère. La moitié des 26 mots sont d’ailleurs des emprunts venant du français (ce qui le site ne dit pas).

En revance, il m’a permis de découvrir la version en ligne du célèbre dictionnaire des frères Jacob et Wilhelm Grimm, collectionneurs de contes, certes, mais aussi philologues et linguistes (surtout Jacob). La mise au point de la version papier a pris plus d’un siècle (la séparation de l’Allemagne en deux états n’a pas dû aider non plus). Réjouissons-nous donc de sa disponibilité en en version numérique sur le site de l’Université de Trier (Trèves), même si la navigation n’est pas toujours aisée. Ce qui saute aux yeux : l’orthographe en toutes-minuscules dans les entrées, noms propres exceptés.

Brian Weatherson at Thoughts Arguments and Rants, which is a philosophical blog of the analytical persuasion, has an interesting online experiment about vagueness. I won’t tell you what precisely it asks (be assured, it doesn’t hurt), but the question is akin to “how big is huge” or “how many pieces of underwear can I still fit into a full suitcase”. (The latter is a personal in-joke, not a philosophical problem.)
