… scientists from the RAND corporation conjectured that maybe, just maybe, people might own “home computers” 50 years on:

However the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admit that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work […]. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use […]

This is from an unfortunately unattributed clipping (from a paper that had a refreshingly undogmatic attitude towards splitting infinitives, I note). Fortran had just been invented that very year, by the way.

    There was another amazing event in 1954 that was little noticed by the rest of the world. I was born and at the age of 50 I do own a computer. There was something in what they said back then. :grin:
